Hollywood icon Hugh Jackman is a pillar of health. You have to be in tiptop shape to transition from blockbuster action star (he has played Wolverine 11 times in films, most recently in Deadpool & Wolverine) to song-and-dance man on Broadway and in movies, including 2025’s Song Sung Blue. Add a hectic travel schedule on top of that—his upcoming family film, The Sheep Detectives, was shot in England—and the Australian has his work cut out for him. Travel + Leisure spoke with Jackman about his travel non-negotiables, how he stays healthy when traveling all over the world, and why a plane is like a day spa to him.

When traveling, Jackman says his strategy is simple: “I try to do everything I can to set myself up for success.” He keeps his schedule flexible as travel and irregular sleep patterns are a challenge for his body. But he is not flexible on his non-negotiables, which consist of meditation, AG1, and taking 20 minutes for himself. “90 percent of the time, I will also train and try to move my body. I try for 45 minutes, but even if it’s 20 minutes, I’ll do it. And those things really help me mentally, physically, and spiritually.”

He has a hotel room workout that he swears is harder than a gym workout. “I’m super lucky I have a great trainer. When I go somewhere, I’ll go in and video the gym immediately because each one is different. I’ll send the video to her, so she knows what I’m working with, but I can do a workout without anything, and I’ll do it wherever I go.” Another tip for tired, jet-lagged travelers? “If there is water, I’m getting in it. That’s another nonnegotiable. I don’t care what time of year it is, I’m getting in,” he told T+L.

What’s the most unlikely essential item you always pack?
Mouth tape. And too many books.
Do you have any airport or in-flight rituals to keep calm?
I love traveling, and I love the time to myself. Having many years of traveling with younger children, now I feel traveling on a plane is like a day spa. I realize that time is a rarity in life, and I go for it.
What is your go-to jet lag cure?
Jumping in the ocean. As soon as you land, particularly if it’s in the morning, jump in the ocean. I think the seawater cures it more than anything.
Do you have a go-to snack or drink when flying?
I always ask for hot water with lemon, and I always take nuts with me.
What is the first thing you do when you get to the hotel room?
I like to unpack and not leave anything in the suitcase, especially if I’m there for more than one night.
Do you have a favorite hotel?
Claridge’s in London.
Another travel tip? Getting access to a washing machine. Though he aspires to be someone who never checks a bag, he usually ends up having to do so. “I leave my packing too late. No packing hacks. I’m the guy with the large suitcase with just too much. But I usually try to find out if there’s a washing machine where I’m going, and if I can, I will wash things. My best hack,” Jackman said.
Ever the chameleon, Jackman—who primarily resides in New York City but does return home to his native Sydney often—adapts to his environment, wherever in the world it may be. “Wherever I am, I usually try to adapt. I try to have an experience that I can only have in that city if I’m traveling. I’ll ask locals because I want to have something that’s authentic, that’s unique to that city. I try to get outdoors as much as possible. I really don’t care about the time of year or the weather. In fact, the colder it is, the more I’ll embrace it.”

As for dealing with major time changes (Sydney is 14 to 16 hours ahead of New York, depending on the time of year), the Academy Award nominee says he tries to adapt as quickly as he can, and that means seeing as much daylight as possible. It helps that he has always been a morning person, which is why he is AG1’s newest global ambassador as they just launched their Morning People platform. Jackman has been an AG1 user since his doctor recommended the supplement powder to him over five years ago. Jackman says AG1 helps him kickstart his mornings, but he says no matter where he is traveling, getting as much daylight as possible is also the key. “I’m working with the sun—awake with the sun and asleep when it’s dark. Routine has really helped me.“
