The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is North America’s highest and longest steam train. Fall is the most popular time to ride, with peak foliage expected from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3.
Few experiences compare to riding a vintage steam train that winds through the heart of the Rockies in the fall.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, North America’s longest and highest steam railroad, takes passengers deep into landscapes that few people ever get the chance to see. Designated a National Historic Landmark, this remarkable route spans more than 64 miles of unspoiled wilderness, traversing the majestic scenery of Colorado and New Mexico.
Trains on this historic route depart from Chama, New Mexico, or from Antonito or Cumbres in Colorado. Starting from Chama, the journey begins with a steep climb toward Tanglefoot Curve before reaching Cumbres Pass, where the view opens up at 10,015 feet to sweeping alpine meadows and mountain ridgelines. From there, the train crosses the highest point on the line, the Cascade Creek Trestle, a wooden bridge located 137 feet above the canyon floor. About halfway through the full-day trip, the train stops at the scenic Osier Station in Colorado, where passengers can enjoy a hearty lunch of local dishes like honey-barbecued pork, green chile beef brisket, and peach cobbler.
A highlight of the route is Toltec Gorge, where the tracks run along rugged cliffs high above the Rio de los Pinos, offering spectacular views hundreds of feet below. The train continues its journey toward Antonito, Colorado, or returns to Chama, depending on the chosen itinerary. The longest option lasts about eight hours and is a one-way train ride with a return bus trip.
For those planning around the foliage, the high elevation of the route means fall colors arrive earlier than in many other areas. Aspens typically peak in the southern Rockies between late September and early October. In 2025, the peak season is expected from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3. The railroad offers several seating types, from open-air gondolas to coach seats and the more upscale parlor car experience. The train’s newest option, the Premium class, provides passengers with a window seat and an individual chair, perfect for enjoying the foliage in all its splendor.
