  • A new study named Porto, Portugal, as the best destination in the world for post-breakup travel.
  • The rankings evaluated cities based on safety, affordability, nightlife, spas, museums, and access to nature.
  • Osaka, Japan, and Lisbon, Portugal, followed closely behind, praised for their comfort food, vibrant nightlife, and solo-friendly experiences.

It’s February, which means love is in the air. But for people going through a heartbreak, that energy can feel downright rude. However, those not feeling the lovey-dovey vibe of the month don’t need to wallow in self-pity. All they need to do is get up, dust themselves off, and head to one particular city in Europe that is allegedly the perfect spot to go post-breakup.

In January, software company Nomad eSim released its list of the best post-breakup destinations around the world. For its report, it first created a seed list of spots, then analyzed and ranked those destinations based on six factors: safety, affordability, number of spas, number of nightlife attractions, number of museums, and number of nature attractions. After doing all that research, it named Porto, Portugal, the No. 1 place to go after dumping that loser for good.

“Topping our list with an impressive overall score of 70.6 percent, Porto combines exceptional safety with stunning riverside views along the Douro River,” the study’s findings explained. “With top marks for nightlife (86/100), museums (88/100), and nature access (85/100), Porto offers the perfect combo: cultural enrichment by day, wine tasting sessions in the evening, and exciting nights out to let loose and have fun.”

And, to top it all off, the study found that Porto is home to an “abundance of wellness” spots, which “means you can pamper yourself all day.”

Coming in second is Osaka, Japan, which nabbed an impressive 69 percent score. “Known as Japan’s kitchen, this city takes ‘comfort food’ to an entirely new level,” the findings revealed as to why it’s such a great spot for the newly single. “The exceptional nightlife scene (87/100) and generous spa offerings (84/100) create the perfect environment for heartbreak recovery. Plus, with a solid affordability score of 60/100, your healing journey won’t break the bank.”

And rounding out the top three is one more Portuguese spot, Lisbon, which nearly took over Osaka with a score of 68.7 percent.

“Lisbon … offers a strong mix of affordability, culture, and solo-friendly activities. The city scores highly for spas (86/100), museums (86/100), and nightlife (85/100), giving you plenty to do without needing a packed schedule,” the findings stated. “Lisbon is easy to explore alone, whether you’re riding Tram 28, walking through historic neighborhoods, or sitting at a viewpoint overlooking the city. It’s a good choice if you want structure during the day and relaxed social options at night.”

Of course, all of these destinations also have a very strong presence on dating apps, and offer plenty of chances to meet someone new in real life—only this time, maybe you’ll end up with a happier ending. See the full rankings at NomadeSim’s website.
